Our Ecology

The Maui Paradise Marathon is eco-friendly. What do we mean by this? What can an event do in terms of eco-awareness and leading by example?

Holo the whale is our mascot for several reasons. Firstly the race will be in the middle of the whale migration season in Maui and there are lots of opportunities to do some whale-watching activities before or after the races. Secondly everyone loves whales and as the largest sea creatures we often associate the health of our planet with the health of our whale populations. With Holo as our mascot we intend to both provide information on eco-systems in the Hawaiian islands as well as show an eco-friendly code of behaviour within our race infrastructure. Within your race packet there will be information on the latest recycling activities around the world and how it might apply to us on a day to day behavior.

Our eco-friendly code of behaviour: For all disposable items we will re-use where we can and recycle where we cannot. This applies to all of our consumables. There will be no plastic bags associated with the Maui Paradise Marathon. You will be given a colorful and reusable tote bag souvenir at packet pickup. This tote will allow you to keep all of your running goodies secure and avoid additional plastic bags from polluting the waterways of Maui, impacting the sea life including our whale friends. At the expo and on the Kalama Beach Park there will be recyle bins clearly designated. On the course we will still probably use plastic cups but these will all be collected after the race and recycled locally.
